Overview

The Middle Fork of the Flathead runs along the southwestern border of Glacier National Park, giving you front-row views into one of the most dramatic wilderness landscapes in North America. Class II and III rapids give kids enough to scream about while the calmer stretches in between leave room to catch your breath and scan the canyon walls for osprey, eagles, and the occasional bear. Rafting season runs from late May to mid-September, with higher water and bigger rapids in June and mellower whitewater by August.

How We Hop

We compare operator history, review patterns, experience quality, trip structure, age and skill fit, local logistics, and clear tradeoffs. Then we hop the noise and narrow the field to three. The goal is not to list every good option, but to show the three choices that give different types of travelers the clearest reasons to book.

The Picks

01

Glacier Guides

Voted a Top 5 Rafting Company in the US by USA Today and named Best Whitewater Guide in Montana. More than 90 percent of its guides return each season, one of the clearest signals of a well-run operation in this market.

The Edge

Smaller rafts, high guide retention, and the broadest family fit of the three make this the strongest all-around option for families who want the day to feel more personal and well-led.

The Difference

This is the best pick if you want a more guide-driven experience, not just a standard raft trip. It is also the easiest operator to build a bigger Glacier itinerary around, with hiking, biking, fishing, and overnight camping in the mix.

The Local Insight

Most families default to the Middle Fork without realizing the North Fork is even an option. If your group includes a child under five, a nervous parent, or grandparents, ask about the North Fork scenic route directly. It is a different river experience, not a lesser one.

Best For

Families with a wide age spread who want a guide-led experience rooted in Glacier, not just a splash-and-go rafting trip. If your group includes younger kids, nervous first-timers, and older kids who want real rapids, this is the operator with the clearest range to scale the day up or down.

02

Wild River Adventures

The only remaining independently family-owned rafting company in West Glacier, with more half-day whitewater departures in peak season than any other operator in this set.

The Edge

Wild River is the easiest fit for families juggling park plans, weather shifts, or changing energy levels. Its smaller scale also gives the experience a more personal feel than the bigger operations.

The Difference

The Park-N-Paddle combo with Glacier Highline pairs rafting with a zipline and aerial ropes course in a single booking, making it one of the smartest add-ons in West Glacier for older kids.

The Local Insight

The first launch of the day is noticeably quieter on the water than the midday runs, when more boats are out. If your family does not mind an earlier start, that first departure is the better play in July and August.

Best For

Families with kids 6 and up who want rafting to fit cleanly into a fuller Glacier day. This is also a strong pick for families who like the idea of smaller rafts, more guide interaction, and an easy add-on with Glacier Highline.

03

Glacier Raft Company

Rafting out of West Glacier since 1976, with a 4.9 TripAdvisor rating across more than 6,300 reviews and TripAdvisor Best of the Best recognition in 2025 for its half-day trips.

The Edge

No one here offers a broader trip menu. Scenic floats, whitewater, full-day meal trips, sport rafts, inflatable kayaks, and multi-day options make this the widest-ranging operation in the set.

The Difference

Scenic floats accept kids as young as two later in the season, making this the best fit for mixed-age families not ready for whitewater. It is also the easiest option for families who want a smooth booking process and the most trip variety in one place.

The Local Insight

By late July and August, water levels drop and the whitewater gets noticeably tamer. If your trip lands later in the season, adjust expectations and consider the scenic float if your family is more excited about Glacier views than bigger rapids.

Best For

Families who want a polished, no-surprises day with one of the most established rafting operations in West Glacier. It is also a strong option for families staying nearby who want multiple departure windows, a broad trip menu, and the option to turn a simple half-day into a fuller river experience.

The Breakdown

HOPS Take

If a bear is the reason your trip goes sideways, Glacier Guides has what it takes to make sure it does not. If your kids need a zipline and ropes course to stay interested in a family vacation, Wild River already thought of that. If your idea of a perfect rafting day is handing someone else all the decisions and just showing up, Glacier Raft Company has been taking that weight off parents since 1976.
